Let Her Linger

Don’t hustle her along but let her crouch down to get a better look

She’ll dig her fingers into the moist dirt

Infusing the earth up underneath her little nails

Let her linger a while longer…

Her eyes wander to the scene around her

Looking up unto the sky

She spies the jet trails left behind

Let her linger a while longer…

To her right a bird sings softly

Never has she heard a sweeter sound

She asks, “What kind of bird is that, Mommy?’

Let her wonder a while longer…

You search the tree she’s pointing at

And let her know that’s a Meadowlark

It sings a distinctive song that waits for a call back from it’s kind

Let her wonder a while longer…

Where do we go from here

But up into that tree to see

That meadowlark who flees the scene when she comes into close

Let her climb a little higher…

She brushes her hair out of her face

And reaches for that next branch

Her sneakers holding tight against that tree trunk

Let her climb a little higher…

From the spot she sits she can see farther than before

To where the hills stretch out beyond her sight

She catches a glimpse of how small she is in this great big world

Let her dream a little bigger…

She thinks of places she wants to see

Places she’s only read about in books

Animals she has to witness outside the walls of a zoo

Let her dream a little bigger…

Making her mark upon the world

Fulfilling the purpose deep inside

Placed there by a Creator that new her before she was born.

And set forth with freedom by a mother who let her

Linger a while longer…
